Mammography: An Overview

Mammography is a specialised diagnostic imaging procedure that examines breast tissue using low- dose X-rays. It can spot anomalies before physical signs show up, making it one of the best techniques for early breast cancer screening.

How Does Mammography Work?

An X-ray machine designed especially for breast tissue is used in mammography. The patient must position their breast between two plates that are connected to the x-ray machine during the test. The tissue is uniformly distributed by the compression between the plates, providing a sharper image and a reduced radiation dosage.

Since the compression may cause some discomfort, the procedure is usually short (about 20 minutes) and patients usually bear it well.

Types of Mammography:

Screening Mammography: Women who show no symptoms of breast cancer are advised to get screening mammography because it helps identify abnormalities early. The American Cancer Society recommends that women 45–54 years old have a mammography annually, while women 55 and beyond should have one every two years.

Diagnostic Mammography: Diagnostic mammography is performed when a breast abnormality, such as a lump, thickness, or discharge from the nipples, is discovered. For diagnostic mammography, more views and possibly more detailed pictures are required.

Importance of Regular Mammography

Routine mammography is essential for the early diagnosis and management of breast cancer. Women at average risk should start screening at age 40 and continue as long as they are healthy, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ACOG). However, women with higher risk factors, such as a family history of breast cancer, BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations, or prior chest radiation, may begin screening earlier.
