LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure)
The Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP) is a highly effective, minimally invasive procedure done to remove abnormal cells from the cervix. A valuable tool in gynecologic oncology, it is primarily recommended for women with abnormal Pap smear results or those with cervical dysplasia, a precancerous condition that, if left untreated, could progress to cervical cancer.
How LEEP Works
LEEP involves carefully removing abnormal tissue from the cervix using a thin, electrified wire loop. The procedure typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes and is performed under local anaesthesia. During the procedure, the doctor will insert a speculum to visualise the cervix and apply a local anaesthetic to numb the area. The loop wire is then carefully positioned over the abnormal tissue. The tissue is successfully sliced away by the electrical current in the loop wire. This tissue sample is then sent to the lab for further tests to confirm the diagnosis.
Within a few days following the treatment, the majority of women can return to their regular activities. However, it’s advisable to avoid sexual intercourse and tampon use for some time to allow the cervix to heal properly.
