HPV Vaccines

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections and high-risk strains are associated directly with cervical cancer development. Nearly 90% of cervical cancer cases are linked with persistent HPV infections, primarily type 16 and type 18. Fortunately, HPV vaccines can safely and effectively prevent HPV infections and the associated diseases.

What Are HPV Vaccines?

HPV vaccines are designed to protect against the common high-risk HPV types that are responsible for cancers like cervical, vagina, vulvar, anal and oropharyngeal cancer and also non-cancerous conditions like genital warts. There are currently three HPV vaccines available in India:

1. Gardasil – It targets four strains of HPV 6, 11, 16 and 18.

2. Gardasil 9 – The most well-known vaccine in India, it offers protection against nine types of HPV that are associated with a majority of HPV-related cancers.

3. Cervavac – India’s first indigenous HPV vaccine, it is a quadrivalent vaccine that protects against HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18.

All three of these vaccines are highly effective when given before exposure to the virus, particularly in preteens and young adults.

Who Should Get the HPV Vaccine?

The HPV vaccine is advised for both males and females, usually starting between the ages of 9 and 15, with catch-up vaccination up to 26. In some cases, adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may also benefit from the vaccine.

How Does the Vaccine Work?

HPV vaccines stimulate the body’s immune system to produce antibodies that identify and fight off the virus. Administered as a series of two or three doses, the vaccine is most effective when given to an individual before they become sexually active.
