To carefully examine the cervix, vagina and vulva for any signs of cancer, precancerous changes, or abnormal cells, a specific diagnostic procedure known as a colposcopy is carried out. It is typically recommended after an abnormal Pap smear or HPV test and helps with the early detection and treatment of cervical and other gynaecological cancers.
Colposcopy typically takes 15 to 20 minutes and is a fairly easy procedure. A speculum is carefully put into the vagina to open it, much like a Pap smear. After that, a magnifying and lighted microscope (called a colposcope) is used to visualise the cervix and a small tissue sample (biopsy) is taken from any suspicious area. To ascertain whether abnormal cells are present, this sample is subsequently viewed under a microscope.
Following the procedure, there may be little discomfort or spotting, particularly if a biopsy is performed. For a few days, patients are recommended to refrain from using tampons, douching, or sexual activity. To review biopsy results and prepare for additional management—which could involve observation, excisional procedures, or referral for more intensive oncological care—follow-up appointments are crucial.
The cervix is a primary site for HPV-related infections, often requiring detailed inspection beyond a routine pelvic exam. By providing a magnified picture of the cervical tissue, a colposcopy can assist in detecting any abnormal changes that might be signs of malignancy.
Colposcopy may be advised by a gynaecologist in the following circumstances:
