Cytoreductive Surgery for Ovarian Cancer Treatment

- Initial Staging and Diagnosis

Cytoreduction is primarily done to physically remove as much of the visible tumour as possible. This includes the removal of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus (total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy) and potentially other organs or tissues that may be affected by the cancer. - Improve Chemotherapy Response
By removing visible tumours, CRS allows chemotherapy to be significantly more effective. Microscopic residual cancer is more susceptible to the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapy drugs.
In some cases, CRS can be combined with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC), where the therapy is delivered directly into the abdominal cavity to kill any remaining cancer cells.
